Statesboro PD Sponsoring New Youth Baseball Team at Luetta K. Moore Park http://statesboropd.com/blog/statesboro-pd-sponsoring-new-youth-baseball-team-at-luetta-k-moore-park/ Tue, 24 Oct 2017 19:10:54 +0000 http://statesboropd.com/?p=2528

PRESS RELEASE
October 24, 2017

From the Office of Mayor Jan Moore and the Statesboro Police Department.

Mayor Moore: “I am very pleased to announce that the Statesboro Police Department is starting a new baseball program for the youth of our city. Statesboro Police Chief Mike Broadhead has been meeting with the Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department to bring this initiative to life. We recognize that youth baseball is becoming more and more expensive. In addition to the cost, many kids live a long way from Mill Creek Park, and simply don’t have the transportation to participate in youth baseball there. The beautiful thing about this initiative is that it will bring baseball back to Luetta K. Moore Park, located right in a residential neighborhood, at no cost to individual families. In fact, Chief Broadhead is seeding the program with $1,000 out of his own pocket. This is a great example of how we can get kids off our streets, and into our parks!”
Initially, the team will focus on creating a 14U team for 13 and 14 year old children. The program can be expanded to other age groups as interest develops. The team will be funded through the police department and by individual donations. Individuals who would like to donate are asked to contact the chief directly. Funds will go through the Statesboro Police Foundation, a recognized 501c-3 non-profit organization, so donations are tax-deductible.
The team is being coordinated this autumn with the intention of competing in the spring and summer. Practices will be set up so as to not conflict with middle school activities like baseball and basketball. So if kids are interested, they can play on our new team in addition to their school programs.
Chief Broadhead: “We don’t want kids to leave their existing programs. We are not trying to take kids away from their travel teams, we are trying to build something new for kids that are not already engaged in a baseball program. The Parks and Recreation Department has been fantastic to work with in the planning stages, and they are supportive of our efforts. We chose this age group to start with because kids at this age are right on the cusp of becoming young men, and the choices they make over the next few years can shape the men they ultimately become. We want to make sure they are making good, healthy choices, and baseball is a great way to reach kids and help them develop their character. We also want to make sure they learn that the police are here to support them and help them achieve their goals.”
The team will be known as The Arrows (Straight and True!), and will work out at Luetta Moore Park. There will be an informational meeting on Sunday, November 12th, at 2pm in the building at the park. No baseball experience is necessary! Come and get engaged! Baseball is a great way to learn teamwork, share experiences, and develop character. Mostly, baseball is FUN!

Madison Bridges, Community Information Specialist
Statesboro Police Department

Statesboro, Georgia 30458

The Statesboro Police Department would like to update the community on some recent alcohol compliance operations that yielded positive results.

The Statesboro Police Department’s Alcohol Beverage Control Officer worked with Georgia Division of Revenue Enforcement Officers this past week to check compliance at local package stores. Twenty-four locations were checked by sending in an underage person to attempt to purchase alcohol. We are excited to report that not one of the twenty-four stores sold to the underage individual.

The Statesboro Police Department truly appreciates the diligent work being done by the clerks at our local stores to ensure that alcohol is not easily obtained by underage persons.

Over the past month, officers with the city and state have also checked for compliance with the underage drinking laws at 19 bars and restaurants. One business sold to an underage person, and 13 citations were issued for Underage Possession (7) and Possession of a Fake ID (6).
